Tankless Water Heater Installation and Service
Tankless heating removes the storage tank and heats water as it flows. That changes the equipment, but it also changes what the house has to supply — gas capacity, venting and space are usually the deciding factors, not the unit itself.
Tank vs. tankless
Both are legitimate choices. Which one fits depends on the property more than on preference.
Storage tank
Heats and holds a fixed volume. Simpler to install into existing plumbing, lower up-front cost, and limited by tank capacity during heavy use.
Tankless
Heats on demand with no stored volume. Takes up less space and is not capacity-limited in the same way, but places higher demands on gas supply and venting.
The deciding factors
Existing gas line size, available venting route, electrical supply, mounting location and how the household actually uses hot water.
What gets checked before a tankless install
A tankless unit is only as good as what feeds it, so the assessment starts upstream of the heater.
- Gas line size and whether the supply can carry the unit's demand
- A venting route that can be run correctly from the intended location
- Electrical supply at the mounting position
- Clearances, mounting surface and access for future service
- How the existing hot water distribution is laid out
- Whether the household's usage pattern actually benefits from the change
Servicing an existing tankless system
- Error codes or a unit that shuts down mid-use
- Hot water that arrives inconsistently or fluctuates
- Reduced flow through the unit
- Descaling and maintenance on a system that has not been serviced
- Correcting connections, isolation valves or venting from a previous install
